After reports on the internet last year that the sperm bank at Ren Ji Hospital, Fu Zhou Lu, Shanghai, China, was paying for donations which were collected by beautiful young nurses, by hand, the hospital released a press statement denying this as a hoax.

This however is a cover up. After an extensive three days and nights discussion during a top secret meeting with a Chinese health official, and three belly dancers, at an opium den in Kashgar, I learnt that the government is about to begin subsidising airfares and accommodation to bring people from all over the world to the sperm bank in Shanghai, to diversify the gene pool.

Future plans also revealed a joint program with Taiwan to build a sperm bank available to the entire planet, in a healthy safe clean environment orbiting the earth, the International Sperm Station. The first components of the station will be launched in 2010 aboard the Jessica Rabbit Rototickler II rocket from an as yet undisclosed location.

This is created, with permission, from a transverse MRI scan of a friend's right thigh.

My first thought as I saw the MRI was, "wow, pacific island atoll, so beautiful".

It reminds me of living in NZ, Fiji, Tonga and Hawaii when I was a baby.

There is a now old technique in 3D where you can use a greyscale image and extrude it into 3D, using normally the brightest parts of the image to create peaks, and the darkest parts the base.

These are alternately called heightfields, if used for creating a terrain, or bump, normal or displacement maps, if used for example to create the relief of cloth or another material's surface.

I work in scientific visualisation, medical imaging, molecular graphics and forensic consultancy and have some very advanced software, some of it I help design and test, and this includes software for processing MRI data, and for processing any image as a heightfield.

Then also I have nice tools to take a heightfield, and add clouds, sun, water and render it all, which is how I did this, using the second MRI transverse scan of my friend's leg.

Eavo Atoll 2 is a version filtered to simulate vintage film cross processing.

Done on a 12 year old PowerMac 5500 with a 275 MHz processor, and 128 MB RAM.

Semen acts as an anti-depressant

The study, which is bound to provoke controversy, showed that the women who were directly exposed to semen were less depressed. The researchers think this is because mood-altering hormones in semen are absorbed through the vagina. They say they have ruled out other explanations.

Study:
People who score over 17 are considered moderately depressed.

His team divided 293 female students into groups depending on how often their partners wore condoms, and assessed their happiness using the Beck Depression Inventory, a standard questionnaire for assessing mood.

The team found that women whose partners never used condoms scored 8 on average, those who sometimes used them scored 10.5, those who usually used them scored 15 and those who always used them scored 11.3. Women who weren't having sex at all scored 13.5.
What's more, the longer the interval since they last had sex, the more depressed the women who never or sometimes used condoms got.

The team also found that depressive symptoms and suicide attempts were more common among women who used condoms regularly compared with those who didn't.

The results aren't a complete surprise because semen does contain several mood-altering hormones, including testosterone, oestrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, prolactin and several different prostaglandins. Some of these have been detected in a women's blood within hours of exposure to semen.

The U.S. Justice Department has provided federal prosecutors "clarification and guidance" urging them to go after drug traffickers, but not patients and caregivers, in the 14 states that have medical marijuana laws.

Medical Marijuana is legal in the following states:
Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Maryland, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

I began work on this a few years ago and shelved it.

Remodelled, shaded and lit, then rendered in Blender from the 3D Studio model of the 20th Century Fox logo created by Jan (aka Laserschwert) in 2006 that was originally published on scifi3d.

I recreated the sky and stars using pre render compositing of horizon maps directly in Blender, replaced the spot and environment lamps, removed the terrain and massive sky sphere, and made some edits to the mesh. No post production has been used.

Kodak Cineon and Industrial Light and Magic EXR formats, and print ready renders of the completed version of this scene might be made available in the future.

I nearly had to use my surgical skills yesterday. Picked up a thick whisky glass first thing after I awoke, to wet my throat and give me a jolt.

Crushed it in my hand as if I was bionic. It cut halfway through my palm, deep dark blood for about 30 minutes while I removed glass fragments.

The cut was deep enough I got my field kit and was thinking of trying to load suture thread into a needle with one hand. Luckily that has turned out to be unnecessary. No nerve damage or infection, and internal blood vessels seem to be OK.

10th April update : There seems to be nerve damage. Numbness is persistent in all four fingers of my left hand. So far there is no loss of articulation, nor any signs of infective complications. Blood vessels appear to be healing themselves.

The implication of this is serious, I could have permanently lost the use of all fingers on my left hand. Those that know how many creative skills I have and make use of will probably understand how much that scares me.

I recently upgraded my operating system, and this meant rebuilding, installing and testing all the software I use for medical, molecular and other 3D imaging and rendering. I'm still doing this and have loads more to do.

But ....

A recent series of images by diosa_en_disfra naked in a darkly lit green bathroom inspired me to take a break and test out the latest version of the human character creation program I use with the latest version of modelling and rendering tools.
